From the 1880 census, I learned that Charles Lillie was born in New Hampshire as were his parents. He was a machinist. His wife was born in Canada. Sons, Charles and Alfred both born in Massachusetts and worked as clerks in a mill.

This family is probably descended of George Lillie (abt 1637 - 1691) of Reading, Massachusetts. It is an unusual surname, but common in Middlesex County. He's my 8x great grandfather. The name was passed along alot as a first name for boys, too, including several generations of Lillie/Lilley Eaton. What an odd name for a boy!
Heather, I also have 2 lines in my tree, one very early from CT, another in Michigan. So who knows where they were from, but, I agree, it is an unusual surname.
What a beautiful (and informational) stone!
Thank you Lisa.
